Cheng San Chinese Orchestra biography

csco-pic-2

Cheng San Chinese Orchestra (CSCO) has been an active orchestra since the late 1990s. This youthful orchestra attracted learners from various schools and graduates, who wanted to continue pursuing their love for traditional Chinese music. Over the years, a small number of the members have gone to pursue Chinese music studies locally and in China, with some of them returning as instructors and professional musicians. The orchestra took part in one of Singapore’s traditional Chinese music scene peak events, the biennial National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council. In 2002, the ensemble won the 1st prize in the open category.

Cheng San Chinese Orchestra successfully staged many full-scale ticketed concerts since 2000. One of the well-acclaimed concerts was in 2002, “The Unforgettable Water Splashing Festival” held at the Singapore Conference Hall, under the baton of Mr Chiang Kum Mun Mike (2000 – 2010), in conjunction to winning the National Chinese Music Competition. The orchestra was also led by Mr Tan Kim Lian (1990 – 1996) and Mr Cheng Chung Hsien (1997 – 2000). In 2007, the orchestra had the privilege to invite renowned Chinese conductor Mr Hu Bing Xu, as the guest conductor for the concert titled “Play with Hu Bing Xu”. In 2009, the orchestra collaborated with Taiwan’s Miao-Li Youth Chinese Orchestra to perform a concert, “Music In Harmony”, at The Esplanade. In celebration of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s 15th anniversary, a National Chinese Orchestra Marathon was held in February 2012. CSCO was one of the 31 participating orchestras in the nation’s ever first marathon, to promote and cultivate the appreciation of Chinese orchestral music locally.

The orchestra also performed publicly on many occasions, such as during Cheng San Community Club’s Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival events. CSCO was also given the honour of performing at The Esplanade’s community outreach concert, “Beautiful Sunday” in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2013 & 2015, where they performed to full houses of delighted audiences, with repertoires of pop and well-known Chinese traditional pieces.  In 2014, CSCO was also given the opportunity to perform at the new Sports Hub at the event of Our People, Our Music.

Mr Lee Heng Quee, a suona musician from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, has been conducting and leading the orchestra since 2011.
